Genetic Testing in China: What to Verify Before a Sample Is Taken

A lower fee or a busy laboratory does not tell you whether a genetic test is the right one. Confirm the laboratory, the assay, the specimen, the written quote and whether a doctor at home can use the report.

Direct answer. A genetic test in China is a laboratory service, not a travel product. Before anyone takes a sample, confirm the laboratory, the exact assay, the gene list or region it covers, the specimen, who interprets the result, and a written itemised quote. Price and laboratory volume do not, by themselves, establish quality. This page is a checklist. It does not order a test, and it does not decide that you need one.

    Key facts

Question What you can settle before travel What this page does not decide
Which test The order a clinician writes, naming the assay and the question it answers That a panel, an exome or a screen is appropriate for you
Which laboratory The legal name, the accreditation scope that covers this assay, and who signs the report That every laboratory in China meets one standard
What you pay A written itemised quote for collection, the assay, interpretation, confirmation, translation and data release A national price, or a comparison with a fee abroad
What you receive The report format, the language, any raw files, and how a finding that needs action will be told to you That a doctor or insurer at home will accept it
When it is ready The date the laboratory writes down before collection A turnaround you can plan a flight around

What to ask before the sample is taken

Send these questions in writing. The answers belong to the laboratory and the ordering clinician, not to a brochure.

    • What is the exact assay name, and which genes, exons or genomic regions does it cover? A hereditary cancer panel, a pharmacogenetic panel, a whole exome and a tumour profile are different tests.
    • Which specimen does this assay require? Blood suits some germline tests. A tumour test can require a pathologist to confirm that the tissue block is the right one. Saliva is enough only when the assay's own sheet says so.
    • What mean coverage and what base-quality figure does the laboratory report for this assay? Ask for the validation document, not a slogan.
    • Which reference databases and which interpretation standard does the report use? A widely used standard for classifying germline variants is the joint guideline of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics and the Association for Molecular Pathology. Ask whether the report follows it, and whether the pipeline also queries resources such as ClinVar and gnomAD.
    • Who signs the report, and is a conversation with a genetics clinician included? A variant of uncertain significance is a result that needs explanation. It is not a diagnosis you should decode from a PDF on the way to the airport.
    • What accreditation covers this assay? Ask for the current certificate and the scope line that names the test. Accreditation of a laboratory, or of a different assay, is not accreditation of the test you are buying.
    • What is the written quote, line by line? Collection, sequencing, interpretation, a confirmatory test, translation, a counselling visit and release of data files can be separate lines.

Domestic sequencing platforms and imported platforms are both in use. The brand of the instrument is not a result. Ask which platform, which chemistry and which analysis pipeline will be used for your sample.

A screen is not a diagnosis

Non-invasive prenatal testing reads cell-free DNA and is used as a screen for selected chromosome conditions, commonly trisomy 21, trisomy 18 and trisomy 13. A concerning screen needs a diagnostic test and a clinician. Do not treat the screen as the diagnosis, and do not treat a reassuring screen as a guarantee that every genetic condition has been excluded.

A consumer genotyping report, of the kind sold as a lifestyle kit, reads selected markers. It is not the same document as a clinical sequencing report of the exons a named assay covers. If a doctor at home has asked for a clinical test, show that request to the laboratory and ask whether the assay you are being offered answers it.

The report, the file and the border

Acceptance is not automatic. Your clinician, your insurer or a later hospital decides whether a report is enough. Before the sample is taken, ask what they would need: the laboratory standard, the assay description, a translation, and any confirmation.

Ask which files the laboratory can release. FASTQ, BAM and VCF are common formats. They are large, and moving them across a border can require consent, a security method and a check against the laboratory's policy and the rules that apply to that transfer. Agree, before you leave, how a result that needs prompt action will reach you and your doctor if you are no longer in China.

Planning the lead time for medical care in China is the wider page for putting a record, a date and a visa category in order. Three groups of patients travelling for care is why a label such as "visitor" does not choose the test. If the question is a medicine rather than a gene panel, innovation-drug access in China is a different page: approval of a medicine is not an appointment, and this site does not sell or source medicines.

    Where PriumCare fits in China

Where that support is confirmed in your service scope, PriumCare can help you send the record and request a written quote and a date.

We do not diagnose, we do not treat, and we do not decide whether a genetic test is appropriate. We do not choose the laboratory's interpretation. PriumCare does not mark up hospital fees. For a sudden or worsening emergency, call 120.

Does a lower price mean a weaker test?

No. It also does not mean a stronger one. The assay, the validation, the coverage, the interpretation and the person who signs the report are the questions that matter. Ask for them in writing.

What should be in the quote?

An itemised laboratory quote: collection, the assay, interpretation, any confirmatory test, translation, a counselling visit and release of data files, if you need those lines. A published range is not a quote.

Is a prenatal cell-free DNA test a diagnosis?

No. It is a screen. A concerning result needs a diagnostic test arranged by a clinician. A reassuring screen does not exclude every condition.

Will my doctor at home accept the report?

Not automatically. Ask, before the sample is taken, what laboratory standard, assay description, translation and confirmation they would require.

Can I take the raw data home?

Only if the laboratory agrees to release a named format, and only along a route that matches the consent you signed and the rules that apply to that transfer. Confirm the file type and the method before collection.

Does this page choose the test?

No. A clinician who can review your record decides. Bring the request you already have from home. Do not replace it with this page.
