What a general health checkup costs at public Grade 3A hospitals in nine Chinese cities. Collected August 2026 from 16 hospitals and 280 published packages.

How these figures were collected
Every figure on this page comes from packages the hospitals themselves publish — hospital booking channels, the public booking platforms hospitals list their packages on, and in one city the hospital's own English package list. Nothing here is an estimate, a quote we negotiated, or a price we set.
For each city we recorded every general health checkup package the hospital publishes, along with its full item list. The verified starting price is the cheapest package that qualifies as a general checkup under the exclusion rules below. The published package range spans the cheapest to the dearest qualifying package, including executive and VIP tiers.
Collection window: August 2026. Coverage: 9 cities, 16 Grade 3A hospitals, 280 qualifying packages, over 10,000 individual line items.
What is excluded
A hospital's cheapest listed package is often not a health checkup. These are excluded from the starting price:
- Pre-employment, driving licence and residence permit examinations
- Single-system screens (gynaecology-only, cardiac-only) and single tests sold as packages
- Optional add-ons and supplementary item bundles
The qualifying rule: a package counts as a general checkup only if it includes at least two baseline components — physical examination, blood chemistry, ECG, imaging — and covers at least five distinct screening areas.
This rule changes the answer. Without it, Shenzhen's starting price would be CNY 33 for a driving licence examination, and Suzhou's would be CNY 154 for a single ambulatory ECG.
Hospital-assigned category labels are not reliable on their own. In one city a gynaecology-only package was filed by the hospital under general checkup, which is why every qualifying package was checked against its actual item list rather than its label.
Known limitations
- Coverage is uneven. Hangzhou reflects four hospitals; Chengdu, Shanghai, Suzhou and Xi'an reflect one each. A single-hospital city shows that hospital's pricing, not the city's floor.
- Where the cheapest qualifying package is men-only, women's packages start higher because gynaecological screening is added. The gap runs from about CNY 40 to CNY 1,280 depending on the city.
- USD equivalents use an indicative rate of 1 USD ≈ CNY 6.80 and are for orientation only.
- Published prices change. The hospital's own quote at the time of booking governs.
- These are hospital prices. They do not include coordination, interpretation, travel or accommodation.
